Bamboo is known as "Green Gold" and "Poor man's Timber". Bamboo belong to the grass family Poaceae (Gramineae). In India there are about 125 indigenous as well as exotic species of bamboo belonging to 23 genera. Bamboo occurs in almost all the states of India, from the tropical to the temperate regions and the alluvial plains to the high mountains. Bamboo requires a temperature of 8 degree celcius to 36 degree celcius with a minimum annual rainfall of 1000 mm and high atmospheric humidity for good growth.

Sale of Bamboo
APFDC has raised Bamboo Plantations over an area of 12,168.17 hectares in the Districts of Adilabad, Khammam, East & West Godavari, Kurnool, Warangal. Sale of harvested bamboo fetches, on an average, a gross revenue of Rs.700 lakhs per annum. Every year about 25.00 lakh Long Bamboos are extracted. These are transported from the plantations to APFDC Depots where sales are held by way of conducting auctions. Besides, about 8000 -10000 Metric Tonnes of Bamboo Industrial Cuts from the unsaleable Bamboos are also extracted annually which is sold to paper industries.
