C A S H E W
APFDC has Cashew Plantations over an area of
14,702.06 ha. in the Districts of Khammam, East & West Godavari, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor including older plantations taken over from A.P.Forest Dept. They yield an annual revenue of about
Rs.250 lakhs.
Cashew is an exotic which was initially introduced in India for soil and moisture conservation, sand dune stabilisation and to act as a wind break in the coastal areas.
APFDC has started planting Cashew from 1978-79 onwards.
Climatic Requirements of Cashew
Cashew is grown in tropics. It requires high temperature with high humidity. Areas with 4 to 5 months of dry season followed by 4-5 months of rainy season are well suited for growing Cashew. It comes up well in sandy loam soil though it also grows well in red loamy soil. It is a light demander and does not grow under shade.
Cashew plantations require certain specified calendar of operations for good growth and optimum yields. Accordingly, APFDC had been maintaining these plantations.
Harvesting of Cashew
Cashew trees flower in January-February and the nuts mature by April-May. The fruit bearing nuts fall to the ground and collection is done twice a week during the season. The nuts are dried in the drying yards for 2 to 3 days and packed in gunny bags.
Sale of Cashew
APFDC sells the right to collect Cashew usufruct by way of tenders/open auction, which will be called generally in the month of October. Tender forms will be available at Head Office as well as Regional Offices which can be obtained on payment of cost of tender form.Yields and Revenue of Cashew
