BEEDI LEAF SCHEME

The Beedi Leaf (ABNUS LEAVES) Trade which involves collection of Beedi Leaf, taken up by A.P. Forest Department with the help of contractors is basically a social welfare activity providing employment t the poor labourers like Scheduled Casts, Scheduled Tribes and other weaker sections of Telangana  area and  nearly 50 lakh man-days of   employment  will be generated in 2-3 months of summer season during which time very little other employment is available to them. The net surplus obtained from the trade will entirely be distributed to the people engaged in collection of the leaf. 

Agency of APFDC

The Government of  have appointed the A.P. Forest Development Corporation Ltd., as their  Agent for Trade in Beedi Leaves under the A P Minor Produce Act, 1971 for the 2008 Beedi Leaves Season. 

Collection of Beedi Leaf

The Beedi Leaf Scheme envisages collection of Beedi Leaf in 403 units situated in the 23 Forest Divisions in 10 Districts of Telangana Region of Andhra Pradesh. About 6.34 lakh Standard Bags is anticipated to be collected during 2008 Season. A standard bag comprises of  1000 bundles of beedi leaves @ 50 leaves per bundle.

Schedule of Operations

The Schedule of Operations (activity involved) in Beedi Leaf Scheme is as follows:

ACTIVITY PERIOD

Conducting advance sale of the beedi leaves to be collected

December / February

Pruning of the bushes for obtaining better flush of leaves

February / March

Collection, curing, packing and transport to godowns

April, May and June

Collection of sale amount and release of produce

From 15th October to 15th January

Sale of Beedi Leaf 

Advance Sale of Beedi Leaves is conducted every year in the month of January / February after giving wide publicity. 298 BL unites with a target of 5,37,000 Standard Bags were sold during 2009 Season The anticipated net revenue is Rs.26.70 crores.
